While many of the effects of eating healthy are long-term (like avoiding heart attacks, diabetes, and strokes), there are some immediate benefits that you'll feel once you start eating more healthy food. Your body will just feel better and have more energy. The more you eat healthy food, the more your body will want to eat healthy food. You'll feel the confidence and pride from making a big positive change in your life. So you don't have to wait twenty years to feel the effects of healthy eating. You'll get benefits immediately.
It can be hard to start eating healthy, because there are many factors stacked up against it:
1) In our culture we are surrounded by inexpensive fast food. It's not healthy, but it's fast and cheap.
2) TV commercials make fast food look delicious.
3) Healthy foods can be more expensive than unhealthy foods.
4) Our taste buds love sugar and salt. It takes a while to break them of that habit.
Knowing the barriers, and being prepared for them, mean you'll be ready to overcome them.
Beyond food, there are other parts of our lifestyle that affect our health and how we feel:
1) Most people do not get enough sleep. Beyond not feeling well when we're tired, we are also driven to eat unhealthy foods, particularly unhealthy carbs.
2) Keep moving! We want to avoid having a sedentary lifestyle, and we want to walk, take stairs, and otherwise keep our body moving. It makes us feel good and it burns calories.
3) We need to pay attention to how much alcohol and caffeine we're getting. Both are powerful chemicals that affect our mood and our digestion and are best handled in moderation.
